New data from the Arizona Dept. of Revenue shows that one year after recreational marijuana use became legal in the state, its generated over $44 million in tax revenue.
Combined with medical marijuana sales, total sales of marijuana topped $1.2 billion in 2021. After steady growth January and February of last year, recreational total sales have been between 50 and 60 million dollars per month, with even higher monthly totals resulting from medical marijuana sales.
There is a 16% excise tax for recreational marijuana sales which has generated over $90 million dollars in tax revenue. Combined with a general transaction privilege tax, total tax revenue from all marijuana sales has resulted in over $196 million for the state with over $7 million dollars going towards education.
Recreational Marijuana sales became legal on January 22, 2021 after passing with 60 percent support from Arizona voters. [Read more at KNAU]
