More marijuana licensing options, lower fees in the works

Michigan on Monday released a set of proposed marijuana industry rules that would add two new license types and reduce fees and costs for obtaining and renewing licenses.

The 116 pages of rules are available for review and the state Marijuana Regulatory Agency is accepting public input through Sept. 27.

Here are some of the most notable proposed changes:

Marijuana educational research license

This new license type creates a pathway for the creation of schools or curriculum related to cannabis education and research. Using the license, educators and researchers would be able to grow and buy state-licensed marijuana for use in studies.

However, due to strict rules surrounding marijuana that accompany federal academic funding, many public universities may not be able to utilize the license benefits, said Derek Hall, a spokesman for Northern Michigan University.

Northern Michigan University runs a popular cannabis-focused medicinal plant chemistry program with 400 students, an indoor grow program and non-credited cannabis courses often using plants other than marijuana due to DEA rules. He was unaware the new license type had been proposed.

“Currently, we follow the federal guidelines related to cannabis,” Hall said. “We do have trace amounts for laboratory use. Those amounts are very, very small. We do not grow cannabis, we do not have and (significant) quantity on campus.” [Read More @ MLIve.com]
